At By Hand & Flame, LLC, we believe that magic should not come at the cost of the planet. Our spiritual practice is deeply rooted in respect for the Earth, and we carry that reverence into every step of our business. From sourcing to packaging, we make intentional choices to reduce environmental impact, minimize waste, and contribute to a more sustainable future for our community and our planet.
Sourcing & Ingredients
We prioritize sourcing herbs, crystals, and materials from reputable suppliers who emphasize ethical harvesting, sustainable farming practices, and fair trade principles. Whenever possible, we purchase from small growers, herbalists, and family-run operations to reduce our environmental footprint and support local economies.
Packaging
Our packaging is intentionally minimal and eco-conscious. We use recyclable, reusable, or biodegradable materials for shipping and product wrapping, including compostable mailers, glass vials, paper-based labels, and crinkle filler. Plastic is only used when absolutely necessary, and we continue to seek better alternatives.
Production Practices
All items are handmade in small batches to prevent waste and ensure quality. Our tools, candles, oils, and spell kits are crafted with care and intention—not mass produced—allowing us to maintain environmental mindfulness and ethical integrity throughout our process.
Reuse, Repurpose, and Return
We encourage customers to repurpose or reuse our glass jars, tins, and vials in their own practice. Many of our kits are intentionally designed to be refillable, customizable, or recyclable after use. In addition, we are developing a voluntary return program for certain packaging materials.
Carbon-Conscious Shipping
We ship via carriers offering carbon-neutral shipping options where available and strive to combine orders into a single shipment to reduce emissions.
Beeswax Candle Upgrade
All tea lights in our Mini Travel Altar Kits are made with beeswax at no additional cost. For our other kits, you can choose to upgrade to beeswax candles for a $2.99 fee per item. Beeswax is a more sustainable, non-toxic alternative to paraffin, and its natural qualities align with both eco-conscious and spiritual values.
Ongoing Improvements
Sustainability is not a fixed achievement but an ongoing process. We continue to research new materials, evaluate our suppliers, and assess how we can better reduce our environmental impact. Feedback from our customers and community plays a vital role in this process.
